Co-Founders Invited as Workshop Instructors

Cynthia Chavez and Brian Gerardo, 2 out of the 3 founders of the Baltimore Dance Crews Project, were invited by Virginia Tech's Bamboom Dance Crew to be instructors of a hip-hop dance workshop. The workshop will be in Alexandria, Virginia on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Dance Studio Lioudmila. This is the first invitation received by BDCP to lead a workshop outside of Baltimore City schools.

About the Workshop Series Host: Bamboom
Bamboom, Virginia Tech's hip-hop dance team, embraces and shares the love of dance with the Virginia Tech community.

Aaren Salido and Christina Franco first conceived the idea of a team after they realized the need for more opportunities at Virginia Tech to express an enthusiasm for dance. From there, the idea gained support from other Tech students with a passion for the art. Franco, along with Brian Gerardo and Stephen Rong, established Bamboom in December 2007. The team became a registered student organization at Virginia Tech soon after the first class of dancers was formed in early February 2008.

The term "bamboom" originated as a way to refer to modern renditions of the Tinikling dances performed by the Filipino American Student Association. The Tinikling, a Filipino-folk dance, utilizes large bamboo poles in the telling of a story, and "bamboom" is the result of the fusion between that traditional bamboo and the explosiveness of hip-hop dance.

Bamboom's founders adopted the name because of its connection to their roots. The team feeds off of the inspiration of those cultural roots and provides an outlet to express the love for dancing that they all share. Their uniqueness is brought to every performance from multicultural performances to university-wide shows.

Bamboo is a symbol of strength and unity. Like the plant, each new class adds a new ring of unity, uniqueness, and growth to the team.
